Fred Graham (actor/manager) and Lilli Vanessi (leading lady)
were once married, but are now divorced. However, she is willing
(just) to play Katherine to his Petruchio in a musical version
of The Taming of the Shrew at Ford’s ‘Theater’
in Baltimore.
Amongst the cast are Lois Lane, up and coming ingénue,
and Bill Calhoun, hoofer and reckless gambler. Bill loses at a
crap game, and signs an IOU with Fred’s name. Two heavies
come to redeem the IOU from Fred. Fred is nothing if not sly,
so when Lilli Vanessi threatens to walk out of the show and marry
her elderly fiancé, Harrison Howell, he persuades the heavies
to ensure that Lilli doesn’t do a runner. She tries to leave,
but realises, just in time, that despite his faults, Fred is the
man she is ‘So In Love’ with.
With words and music by Cole Porter, this is a light-hearted
backstage musical. Based around a performance of The Taming of
the Shrew, it includes a host of well known numbers such as "Another
opening, another show", "Too darned hot", "Wunderbar",
“Always true to you in my Fashion”, and "Brush
up your Shakespeare" ” – this irresistible musical
comedy will delight you with its truly memorable and delightful
songs and music.
