AOS members come from all walks of life. We have a wide age range and members have all sorts of 'day jobs'. The one thing that unites us all is a love of musical theatre and a willingness to be involved in all aspects of putting on a show.
The social aspect of the Society is important to its members - we are a friendly lot. Many good friendships have been forged through AOS and even one or two marriages! There is a regular decant to the pub after rehearsals, plus more arranged functions, such as trips to see London shows or those by other societies. An annual feature of the calendar is the Dinner and Dance in November.
The Society is twinned with Het Belcantogezelschap, the operatic society of Sint Niklaas, Belgium. We have had many exchange visits and performed joint shows both here and in Belgium.
It doesn't stop with AOS - some members of the society have gone
on to professional work in the performing arts:
Tasha Sheridan, who took leading roles in 42nd Street (1999) and
Me and My Girl (2001) recently took the leading role in the West
End production of Mama Mia.
