This time it&#8217;s John Wilkes.<\/h3>\n<h4>What&#8217;s been your favourite AOS role and why?<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I&#8217;ve been lucky enough to play a lot of memorable parts.\u00a0 Gilbert &amp; Sullivan roles are always a good romp, and I enjoyed Gaylord Ravenal in\u00a0<em>Showboat<\/em>.\u00a0 For sauciness, the Emcee in\u00a0<em>Cabaret<\/em> takes a lot of beating and Evelyn Oakleigh in\u00a0<em>Anything Goes\u00a0<\/em>was great fun.\u00a0 But top billing probably goes to Oliver Warbucks in\u00a0<em>Annie<\/em> &#8211; it&#8217;s a fulfilling part and the show is good fluffy fun.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_410\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-410\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/abingdonoperatic.co.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/38460518276_802ee661e2_z.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-410\" src=\"http:\/\/abingdonoperatic.co.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/38460518276_802ee661e2_z-300x219.jpg\" alt=\"Cabaret John Wilkes 2002\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abingdonoperatic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/38460518276_802ee661e2_z-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/abingdonoperatic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/38460518276_802ee661e2_z.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-410\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">John Wilkes as Emcee in 2002&#8217;s Cabaret.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>What&#8217;s the best thing about being in a show?<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Two things &#8211; the camaraderie of doing something with a great bunch of people.\u00a0 We&#8217;re all in it together and working to do the best we can for the audience.\u00a0 And that&#8217;s the second thing.\u00a0 I love the reaction of a live audience, and trying to please and entertain people who have made the effort to come and see us, rather than sitting on the sofa in front of the TV.<\/p>\n<h4>Are you aware of the audience when you&#8217;re on stage?<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gosh, yes!\u00a0 Performing would be a very flat experience without an audience reacting to what&#8217;s going on.\u00a0 I sometimes think the audience is half the performance.\u00a0 An audience is the very stuff of a live show and what makes it interactive and real.<\/p>\n<h4>How do you combat performance nerves?<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nerves are an essential part of performing, I think &#8211; they keep you on your toes.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t get nervous about the things I do, but about the things I might not do&#8230; like forgetting a move or a word, or to come on at all.\u00a0 I do look over my words and moves before going on to do a scene, just to get into the &#8216;zone&#8217;.<\/p>\n<h4>How do you feel when show week comes to an end?<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I know a lot of people come down with a bump after the excitement of the week of the show, but actually I feel okay.\u00a0 I think that we&#8217;ve done our thing and now it&#8217;s time to move on to something new.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every few months, we like to turn the spotlight on an AOS member and find out a little more about them.
