This time it&#8217;s Kate Brock.<\/h3>\n<h4>Where, when and why did you first get involved in musical theatre?<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">My family took me to see\u00a0<em>Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat<\/em> in Edinburgh when I was very young and I was completely enthralled by it &#8211; to the extent that I was practically hanging over the balcony reaching out for Paul Schofield (who played Joseph) when he rose up in his dreamcoat at the finale!\u00a0 I auditioned for and was accepted into the National Youth Music Theatre (NYMT) &#8211; and that&#8217;s when the love affair really began.<\/p>\n<h4>Do you have a favourite show?<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Overall, it has to be\u00a0<em>Les Mis\u00e9rables<\/em> &#8211; epic, historical and French!\u00a0 I have cherished memories of playing Fantine in the school version when I was 17, but be warned, I can actually sing the entire score off by heart, including all the men&#8217;s parts and one-liners.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_749\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-749\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/abingdonoperatic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/16576891273_65d8fceafd_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-749 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/abingdonoperatic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/16576891273_65d8fceafd_o-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Sound of Music\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abingdonoperatic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/16576891273_65d8fceafd_o-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/abingdonoperatic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/16576891273_65d8fceafd_o.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-749\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kate as Maria in The Sound of Music.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>Do you learn a part quickly or struggle with lines?<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I usually get a feel for both script and music fairly quickly, but it can sometimes be a slog to get completely &#8216;off-book&#8217;. Mind you, a few years ago I played Daisy in\u00a0<em>Daisy Pulls It Off<\/em>.\u00a0 She practically talks non-stop in jolly hockey sticks syntax for the entire show.\u00a0 No line-learning has seemed quite as challenging after that.<\/p>\n<h4>Do you enjoy show week?<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yes, tremendously, despite nerves.\u00a0 I love the feeling of camaraderie both onstage and backstage &#8211; I have made some really good friends in this Society.\u00a0 And singing every night with an orchestra is just wonderful.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_751\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-751\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/abingdonoperatic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/41556540572_dd389ff280_z.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-751\" src=\"http:\/\/abingdonoperatic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/41556540572_dd389ff280_z-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abingdonoperatic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/41556540572_dd389ff280_z-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/abingdonoperatic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/41556540572_dd389ff280_z.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-751\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">With her co-stars in Singin&#8217; in the Rain.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>How do you deal with nerves before you go onstage?<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Breathing, stretches and saying a little prayer!\u00a0 And I drink LOTS of water &#8211; I am usually responsible for the enormous queue outside the backstage loo!\u00a0 There&#8217;s always that moment when you stand in the wings trembling and think: why do I put myself through this?\u00a0 But I&#8217;ve come to realise that nerves are part of the process: sometimes life begins at the end of your comfort zone.<\/p>\n<h4>So is it a relief or a let down when show week ends?<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Both.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a bittersweet feeling, coming to the end of a show &#8211; reality is momentarily suspended and then it&#8217;s back home to the inevitability of the overflowing washing basket.\u00a0 But then you look forward to seeing everyone again at the next show&#8217;s talk-in.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_769\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-769\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/abingdonoperatic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/16558389191_89bdffd2db_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-769\" src=\"http:\/\/abingdonoperatic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/16558389191_89bdffd2db_o-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Having fun in 42nd Street\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abingdonoperatic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/16558389191_89bdffd2db_o-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/abingdonoperatic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/16558389191_89bdffd2db_o.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-769\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Having fun in 42nd Street<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>And is there a part you&#8217;ve always wanted to play but haven&#8217;t yet?<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I&#8217;ve always fancied having a go at Mary Magdalene in\u00a0<em>Jesus Christ Superstar<\/em>.\u00a0 And &#8211; moving into the realms of fantasy for a moment &#8211; I would love to defy gravity as Elphaba in\u00a0<em>Wicked<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h4>Thanks, Kate.<\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every few months, we like to turn the spotlight on an AOS member and find out a little more about them.
